The Washington State Patrol in conjunction with the Redmond Police Department and others around King County will be participating in the ‘Click It or Ticket’ seat belt enforcement campaign in coming weeks.

The enforcement campaign will run from May 22 through June 4 in conjunction with Memorial Day weekend and will see officers looking for drivers and passengers riding without seat belts.

Riding in a vehicle without a seat belt is against state law and can result in a $136 ticket.

Vehicle crashes continue to be a leading cause of unintentional death among children, a release from the State Patrol said.

From 2011 to 2015 almost half of child fatalities caused by crashes were caused by not using a seat belt.

State law says all occupants of a vehicle must wear their seat belts or be properly restrained while children under the age of 8 or under 4’9” in height must ride in a car seat. Children over 8 years old but under the same height must also use a car seat and children under the age of 13 must ride in the back seat when it is practical to do so, the release said.
