Redmond High’s wrestlers are always prepared for what’s on tap, and coach Robert Kaneko said he can’t compliment them enough for what they’ve achieved so far this season. A 3A KingCo dual-meet title and a league tournament crown are already in the bag.

“They’ve stepped in and stepped up. They’ve done what they needed to and taken care of business,” the coach said, noting that he’s shifted the lineup over the course of the season due to adversities such as illness.

Redmond keeps rolling no matter what’s placed in front of the squad.

On Saturday, the Mustangs snagged the boys league title with six first-placers and four runners up at Juanita High. The locals finished with 217 points and Lake Washington took second with 176 in the six-team tourney.

Redmond winners were Judah Dorsey (138), Jeremy Hernandez (145), Philip Palm (152), Cameron Allenshipman (160), Luke Kennedy (182) and Nick Kaneko (195).

Second-placers were Nadav Levanoni (113), Jobe Zuniga (120), Alex Ayala (126) and Rani Ghazal (132); third-placers were Josh Medvinsky (132), Jack Ellis (145), Alex Folta (170) and Ben Maier (285).

Those wrestlers qualified for regionals this weekend at Juanita, and fourth-placers Sven Richter (120), Carson Lui (152) and Jason Mitchell (160) will go to districts as alternates.

The Mustangs will have six No. 1 seeds at regionals, but the tourney will be “brutal” with tons of talent, coach Kaneko said. “They know it, they’re ready for it.”

Kaneko won 2A/3A Coach of the Year honors and Lantz Schwabenbauer won Assistant Coach of the Year.

Nick Kaneko said that his dad puts maximum effort into his role as coach and was both excited and humbled to earn the top award.

After receiving his honor, Nick said that Robert shifted his focus back on the team.

“He gives kids the best opportunity to get success,” Nick said. “It’s a huge project to him to focus on the individual wrestlers and what they want to accomplish.”

And that translates into team accolades for Redmond, which won the league dual-meet title with a 7-0 record and was 19-2 overall in dual meets.

• Redmond’s girls won the 3A sub-regional wrestling tournament last week and six of the seven Mustangs advance to regionals this weekend at Sedro-Woolley.

Redmond topped the table with 120 points and Garfield placed second with 76 in the 19-squad event.

Molly Williams won at 105, Kim Alaniz won at 110 and Nadia Medvinsky won at 135.

Second-placers were Shannon Curran at 100, Leah Hiatt at 105 and Marina Montanez at 110.

“Across the board, they just lit it up,” said coach Kaneko, adding that it’s a tight-knit squad. “They practice together, they hang out together and they work together.”

He noted that it was impressive to have Mustangs facing each other in both the 105 and 110 finals.
