The Redmond boys’ basketball team pulled out a second straight narrow 4A Kingco Crest Division win Friday night after slipping past Skyline, 52-46, in front of a packed house at Redmond High.

Justin Alexander led the Mustangs with 15 points and Chris Harrington added 12.

Redmond trailed 17-9 after the first quarter, but then clamped down on defense in the second and third quarters on the way to building a 36-33 entering the fourth quarter. Nick Crossa scored a game-high 18 points for the Spartans.

The Mustangs, who played Bothell on Tuesday after the Reporter’s deadline, beat Woodinville last Tuesday, 41-40.

With the pair of close wins against Woodinville and Skyline, the Mustangs evened their division at 2-2 and their overall record at 4-4.

Overlake boys win big

After a lopsided 61-15 win last Wednesday over Bush, The Overlake boys’ basketball team continued their dominating ways with a 74-32 thrashing of Northwest School on Saturday at home in 1A Emerald City League. The Owls sprinted out to a 22-4 lead after the first quarter and never looked back.

Unlike most of their games, Overlake spread the scoring duties around in their win against Northwest.

Senior forwards Chandler Hire and Danny Poplawski each scored 14 points, followed by Otis Osman, who added in 13 while playing in his first game of the season with the Owls.

The win improved Overlake’s league record to 3-0 and its overall record to 6-2.

Overlake girls bounce back

The Overlake girls’ basketball team was dominated by a red-hot Bush School last Wednesday 60-29, but they fought back to take Friday night’s Sea-Tac 2B league matchup against Northwest School, 53-30.

The Owls held Northwest to single-digit points in the first, second and third quarters as they built an insurmountable 39-19 lead going into the fourth.

Junior forward Jessica Elliott scored a season-high 18 for the Owls, while Maya Marder notched a season-best with 17 points.

The win got Overlake’s league record (2-2) and overall record (3-3) back up to .500 for the season.

Bear Creek boys remain undefeated

Junior Jamie Meyer continued his season-long scoring spree as the Bear Creek boys’ basketball team rolled past Bush, 63-36, in a Sea-Tac 2B contest Friday night to remain undefeated.

Meyer poured in 26 points in front of the home crowd as the Grizzlies improved to 3-0 in league play and 10-0 overall. Meyer, who has scored at least 22 points in nine of the team’s 10 games, is averaging 24.2 points per game.

Bear Creek girls fall

The Bear Creek girls’ basketball struggled to score Friday night as Bush beat the Grizzlies, 56-30, in a Sea-Tac 2B game at The Bear Creek School.

Alexis Miller led the Grizzlies with 10 points and Madelyn Magee added eight.

The Grizzlies, who fell to 1-1 in league play and 3-6 overall, lost their third straight and are averaging just 27 points per game during the skid.

Redmond wrestlers place third at Liberty Tournament

Led by strong performances by team co-captains Nolan Thomas and Jimmy Brookman, the Redmond wrestling team placed third with 142.5 points at the eight-team Liberty Tournament last Saturday at Liberty High School.

With each wrestler working their way through an eight-man bracket, Thomas won the 135 weight class division while Brookman also reached the title match of his 152 bracket, finishing second. Sean Holt placed third at 140 and the team’s only state returner, Esteban Herrera, also took third in the 215 division.

The Mustangs just edged out Foss High School (142 points) for third, and Liberty proved not-so-gracious hosts by winning its own tournament with 175 points, followed by Kent-Meridian with 157.

Mustang swim and dive team handles Issaquah

Dylan Portelance, Max Klassen and Guillermo Romano each won two individual events and the Mustangs swept the relay events as the Redmond boys’ swim and dive team beat Issaquah, 106-80, last Thursday at Hartman Pool in Redmond.

Portelance won the 200-yard freestyle in a state-qualifying time of 1 minute, 50 seconds. He also won the 500 free in 5:28.32. Klassen won the diving competition with a score of 252.45. Klassen, the defending state runnerup in diving, also was a big point scorer in the swimming portion of the meet, winning the 100 breast in 1:08.41. Romano won the 200 individual medley in 2:14.10 and also claimed the 100 fly title in 58.31.

Portelance teamed up with Klassen, Alex Stoll and Kevin Creekmore as the Mustangs’ 200 free relay team won with a time of 1:39.70. Later in the meet, Portelance, Romano, Creekmore and Anton Osobov led the 400 free relay team to victory in 3:38.43. In the 200 medley relay, Andrew Roehrig, Klassen, Romano and Osobov, came away victorious in 1:50.96.
