The Kirkland-Redmond branch of American Association of University Women (AAUW) sponsored five girls from two local middle schools, Finn Hill (Kirkland) and Rose Hill (Redmond), to a week-long camp called Tech Trek at Pacific Lutheran University from July 10-16.
The girls are: Chloe Anderson, Nelly Mex Canul, Aleksandra Cholewinska, Racquel Rodriquz and Mavin Weinrod.
Tech Trek is uniquely designed to show girls firsthand how careers in the science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields can be. These campers experienced college campus and dorm life, attended an array of labs and workshops with intense learning opportunities and experienced a wealth of professional women role models from many careers in math and science.
Tech Trek was created in 1998 by an AAUW member in California. This successful program, which has served more than 11,000 girls in California alone, scaled up to a national AAUW effort in 2012. It continues to grow and spread to other communities across the country.
The camp is offered at Pacific Lutheran University and Eastern Washington University and is supported with funds raised through local and corporate businesses and the local branches of AAUW.
