Twenty-six marketing students from Redmond High School (RHS) are headed to the DECA International Competition in Anaheim, Calif., April 29-May 3. The conference will include presentations by business experts and workshops about marketing, communication and leadership skills that will enhance preparedness for any occupational field.

But such golden opportunities don’t come cheap. Travel costs per student will run about $1,000. To help recoup some of those expenses, the students are seeking community support for a DECA fundraising event at 6 p.m. Wednesday, May 27 at RHS, 17272 NE 104th St.

The “Roaring ’20s”-themed event will feature live music, dancing and refreshments. Admission is $10. Live and silent auctions will also be included.

From past DECA auctions, the students have learned that “experiences” are the most coveted items. Anyone can walk into a store and buy a video game or a DVD. But not everyone has the financial means or the connections to spend a day on a yacht, go behind-the-scenes at a museum or get VIP seating at a sports or concert event. Of course, “we won’t turn down donations of things with a sticker price,” clarified student Jillian Jaccard. And cash donations are always appreciated. But individuals or businesses with access to unique experiences are encouraged to share their generosity to help these bright young people get a head start on their careers.
