A home run derby and car wash are planned to help pay medical expenses for Chanel Cogan, a recent Redmond High School graduate who was seriously injured when she fell 100 feet off a cliff in Kittitas County on the morning of Saturday, July 31.

The home run derby is scheduled from 5-8:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 6 at Hartman Park, 17300 NE 104th St., across from Redmond High School.

Friends of 18-year-old Chanel will wash cars and accept donations from 8 a.m.-3 p.m. this Saturday, Aug. 7 at the Redmond Athletic Club, 8709 161st Ave. NE. Other fundraisers, possibly including a benefit concert, are also being planned, according to family friend Tanner Aaron.

Tiffany Cogan, who is Chanel’s sister and a student at University of Arizona, said Chanel was on a camping trip near Kachess Lake last Saturday when she went for a hike, lost her footing and fell. Friends called 911 and a rescue team made its way down through thick brush where Chanel was unconscious and badly hurt.

Chanel was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, where she is in an induced coma, said Tiffany.

“She has blood between her skull and brain, causing pressure. That’s our biggest concern,” Tiffany said on Wednesday afternoon. “At first, they thought her left arm would be amputated … it was broken in two places and there was nerve damage.”

Chanel has undergone surgery to remove her spleen, has bruised lungs and numerous other broken bones, Tiffany added.

“But she’s strong, she’s hanging in there. She’s a really healthy girl and young, so she’s got that going for her,” said Tiffany.

Chanel is a Running Start student at Bellevue College and has another year to go before she earns her associate’s degree. Chanel’s next plan was to apply for admission to University of Washington, according to Tiffany.

Chanel works at Emerald Heights in Redmond and is an avid outdoors person, loving biking, camping, fishing and sports, Tiffany noted.
