Dunn hits game-winner for Lady Mustangs over Garfield | Prep basketball report

After a trying season so far, the Redmond High girls' basketball team (2-9 in 4A Kingco, 6-11 overall) was all smiles on Saturday afternoon after a thrilling 56-54 win over Garfield that was decided at the buzzer. With 10.1 seconds left, Garfield had tied the game on a pair of free throws, and sophomore guard Kelsey Dunn drove the lane and laid the ball in as the clock was winding down to secure the victory.

With 10.1 seconds left, Garfield had tied the game on a pair of free throws, and sophomore guard Kelsey Dunn drove the lane and laid the ball in as the clock was winding down to secure the victory.

Lauren Bogard led with a team-high 17 points, shooting 73 percent from the field, with Dunn adding 15. Makaela Hayward scored seven while contributing 10 assists.

The win broke a six-game losing streak for the Mustangs, who play again on Wednesday at home against Newport, at 5:45 p.m.

 

Slow start stops Stangs against Bulldogs

A sluggish start proved to be the undoing of the Redmond boys’ basketball team on Saturday evening in a 62-52 road loss to Garfield.

The Mustangs were held to just nine points in the first quarter, and the Bulldogs kept up their signature offensive pace and kept their opponents at bay.

For Redmond, Conner Floan and Jason Harrington led the team with 15 each, with Leslie Ellis adding 12. Garfield wingman Tucker Haymond led all scorers with 23.

With the loss, the Mustangs dropped to 7-4 in league play and 12-5 overall.

 

Bear Creek teams tame Seattle Lutheran

Playing in a Saturday afternoon matinee on the road, the Bear Creek teams handily defeated Sea-Tac 2B league foe Seattle Lutheran, with the boys (9-0, 15-2) winning 71-46 and the girls (8-1, 11-5) 41-23.

The boys actually trailed after the first quarter 13-12, but got the ball rolling in the second period.

The Grizzlies broke the game open, pouring in 27 points while holding the Saints to just nine, while extending their lead in the second half.

Jesse Leuenberger scored a game-high 19 for Bear Creek, with fellow guard Luke Blankenbeckler adding 16.

On the girls’ side, a great defensive effort led the way in holding the Saints to just 23.

Madelyn Magee led all scorers with 14, followed by Kendall Engelstone with 13.
