The Redmond High School baseball won a school-record best 12th straight game Thursday as the Mustangs edged Newport, 3-2, in their final home of the regular season at Hartman Park.

On Senior Night, senior right-hander Kirk Gysler pitched five strong innings and gave up only one run in the Kingco 4A matchup. Another senior, Cody Beliel, came to pitch the final two innings to get the win.

Trailing 2-1 in the bottom of the sixth inning, Redmond scored two runs to pull out the victory. Senior Peter Hendron drove in the tying run and then came around to score the go-ahead run on Lucas Eliason’s RBI single.

The Mustangs, who clinched a Kingco 4A playoff berth earlier in the week, look to make it 13 straight wins with a road matchup against Issaquah today at 3:45 p.m.

Today’s game is the Mustangs’ regular-season finale before next week’s league tournament, which begins Saturday, May 5 at Woodinville High School.

Redmond is now 9-4 in league play and 12-7 overall.

Redmond’s golf streak ends

The Redmond High School girls’ golf team lost its first Kingco 4A match in nearly 10 years Thursday against Newport, 224-235, at Bear Creek Country Club (BCC).

The Knights snapped the Mustangs’ 93-league-match winning streak, dating back to 2003, as Newport freshman Marianne Li earned medalist honors with a 38, which tied the course record.

Redmond senior Keira O’Hearn led the Mustangs with a 41 and Casie Helgeson fired a 43. But Newport’s Isabella Chin, the defending district champion, and Hannah Christian, whose father is the general manager at BCC, also carded 43s to help the Knights pull out the close victory.

“We’ve held off Newport for four years, but couldn’t do it this year,” said Redmond coach Jake Crowley. “Our kids battled and play well overall. Our putting was not as strong as Newport’s and we have a lot of kids who are just not quite experienced enough.”
