Despite a number of impressive performances by the Redmond High boys’ and girls’ track and field teams, the depth of the Issaquah Eagles prevailed in Thursday’s 4A Kingco track meet at Redmond High School.
The Eagle girls beat Redmond, 80.5-69.5, and the boys also fell to Issaquah, 85-60.
Senior Cole Hardwick owned the sprint events, edging Issaquah sophomore Kyle Farmer at the finish line in the 100 meters. Hardwick won in 11.34 seconds and Farmer finished in 11.44.
Hardwick also won the 200 in a season-best 23.24.
Redmond senior Will Young coasted to an 11-second win in the 800, clocking a 2:00.3. Redmond distance specialist Mack Young, the 2008 4A state cross country champion, outlasted Issaquah standout Chris Brasino in the 1,600 with a time of 4:19.24.
Both Redmond boys relay squads also won, as Ian Averman, Scott Daley, Nikolaj LaCour and Hardwick edged Issaquah by two-tenths of a second in the 400 relay with a time of 46.04, and Will Young, Daley, Miles Hille and Mack Young teamed up to win the 1,600 in 3:31.44.
Highlights in the field for the Mustangs included Max Dunn’s winning the high jump of 5 feet, 6 inches, Hardwick taking the long jump with a leap of 19-9 and Coffman winning the triple jump for the second meet in a row at 38-4.75.
For the girls, Issaquah dominated the short events and Redmond took all the distance races.
Holly Young, Jenna Sanders, Melissa Villeneuve and Elyse Hemphill finished 1-2-3-4 in the 800, with Young winning the race in 2:32.54.
Senior Devin McMahon cruised to a 20-second win in the 1,600 with a time of 5:16.24, and in the grueling 3,200 Hailey Jorgensen (12:03.34) was barely able to hold off Issaquah’s Arielle Walton (12:04.44) in a thrilling finish.
In the field, Rachael Axelrod’s shot put heave of 32-1 and Katie Lord’s career-best high jump of 5-5 were both winners. Teammate Darcy Hardwick won both the long jump (15-8) and the triple jump (31-7.5).
The Mustangs’ next track meet is scheduled for Thursday, April 22 at Newport Stadium, with a start time of 4 p.m.
LW HANDLES REDMOND IN MAKEUP GAME
In a 4A Kingco fastpitch game that was rescheduled three times due to rain, Lake Washington handed Redmond a 4-2 loss Thursday.
Redmond starting pitcher Emily Graves went the distance and gave up four runs on seven hits and three walks, but the Mustang offense struggled, tallying only four hits for the game.
Jenny Eisenmann, Ashley Mitchell, Christine Ho and Lindsay Cristobal each had one hit, with Cristobal batting in both of the Mustangs’ runs.
With the loss, the Mustangs dropped to 2-2 in conference play and 5-3 overall.
MUSTANG TENNIS BLANKED BY KNIGHTS
The Redmond High girls’ tennis team put up a fight, but the firepower of Newport was just too much as the Knights shut out the Mustangs 7-0 in 4A Kingco tennis action.
The highlight of the match was No. 4 singles player for Redmond, Sophia Xu, handing Newport’s Anna Choi her first set loss this entire season in a 6-1, 5-7, 6-0 defeat.
The Mustangs next play Garfield at Amy Yee Tennis Center on Tuesday at 3:45 p.m.
