Heather Haworth, a 38-year-old math teacher at Redmond Junior High (RJH), passed away Jan. 6 due to complications of Cystic Fibrosis.

According to RJH Principal Prato Barone, she began working in the Lake Washington School District in the fall of 1995, “taught sciences and math with a unique passion and energy,” and also coached tennis for a number of years.

Barone continued, “Each year, she planned, recruited and sponsored many students in attending a Washington state symposium to encourage young ladies to consider careers in math and science. She found great fulfillment in these and other activities that touched the lives of many students as they considered their future careers. Heather was a dynamic and supportive person who devoted herself to her family and to her school. Her encouragement for students, staff and the community was tireless.”

A memorial service is being planned and details will be posted on the RJH Web site as they become available.

Kathryn Reith, communications director for the Lake Washington School District, said that Haworth had begun teaching this school year but was on a medical leave when she passed away.
