The Redmond High gymnastics squad performed well at last Saturday’s 4A Kingco Gymnastics Championships at Roosevelt High, placing eighth overall and qualifying a number of individuals for this weekend’s District meet at Sammamish High.
Starting out on the beam, Kaylee Borms (7.975) and Ally Garcia (7.475) both had a fall and major deduction, but both still qualified for districts, as did Rachel Lovitt with 7.25.
The Mustangs shined on the floor, as Garcia, a senior, pulled off one of her best performances of her prep career, scoring 9.5 for sixth place in the event, with Borms (9.050), Chelsea Polk (8.95) and Ariel Spinrad (7.25) all advancing.
On the vault, the injury bug bit the Mustangs as Garcia, the team captain, attempted a difficult Tsukahara vault and suffered a sprained ankle on the landing, with Borms faring worse, suffering a season-ending broken foot.
Despite the injuries, Garcia, Polk and Spinrad all qualified for districts.
On the bars, Spinrad and Polk advanced, with Garcia toughing out an optional-level bars routine on a sprained ankle to qualify for districts with a score of 6.875.
“When I asked if (Garcia) could do the routine, I suggested that at the end she just stop and I would set her down so as not to hurt her ankle any worse,” said head coach Jason Farr. “Ally said she would do the whole routine regardless… just before landing (she) purposely pulls past her feet right to her back, rolls over gets up, favoring one foot, and presents.”
Given the week to rest Garcia’s injury, Farr is optimistic that she can qualify for the state meet on Saturday, along with potentially one or two other surprises if the girls perform to their potential.
At districts, the top two teams and two all-around performers will advance to state, as well as the top six individuals in each event outside of the pre-qualified team members.
“I’m hoping to get some great things out of the girls that qualified next week and maybe have a couple of them make it to the state championships,” Farr said.
